Prince of Wales is a large island with an extensive road system and small communities scattered far & wide.  One town is very different to the next, so we have a great range of living opportunities for you, the adventurous traveller! 

From our biggest town of Craig which has all amenities & medical services, to quieter Klawock just 7 miles away, to Naukati & South Thorne Bay with their larger lot sizes to the more remote & quiet Whale Pass & Coffman Cove or to our extremely remote islands - we have something for just about anyone who has caught the Alaska bug!

We love this part of Alaska because it is like living in the National Geographic Channel.  I remember one fishing trip when I first arrived. I get seasick easily so I can only fish in the sheltered inside waters.  Our skiff was trolling slowly up and back a beautiful stretch of water.  I watched a young bear flipping rocks on the beach looking for tasty morsels to eat.  Eagles swooped the skies, diving down to pick up any fish scraps that we tossed them. It was peaceful & perfect.  On another trip, Humpback Whales breached casually around us.  I felt like a cork bobbing in huge waters, in awe of these massive & gentle creatures.  On another trip a wily sea lion stole the day's first king salmon off the line.  Then it came after the second.  It took 3 adults to catch it, one managing the line, another steering the skiff trying to get the fish closer to us than the sea lion, and then the third finally diving half overboard with the net to scoop up that fish before the sea lion got him again! I think the sea lion was just playing with us at this point as he would bob up regularly, fish held gently in his mouth, watching us perhaps with amusement as we bounced up and down, waving our arms and yelling, trying to scare him away!

We've had pods of Orcas swim close by our boat, one big eye up out of the water to look at us more closely.  I've had pods of sea lions pop noisily up next to me while I kayak, and on other trips there is always a shy seal following at a distance, like a quiet angel.

 There are inland lakes to discover within islands, gorgeous muskeg ponds and tumbling waterfalls on mountaintops.  I love camping in the tundra on the top of the mountains, surrounded by awe-inspiring open, wild views in a landscape that feels millions of years ancient, and untouched by civilization.  I remember one unusually hot day wondering around on a mountaintop and being able to walk right up quite close to small groups of bucks!  It was unusual and never happened again, but at the time - wow! 

There are non-stop wonders to explore for those who love the outdoors.  Here we fish, hunt & gather a range of delicious & tasty natural grown foods.  The community is wonderful.  People look out for each other here.  Small towns can have their downsides, but there are always more ups in my opinion; having people around who know each other, look out for each other, and who are kind to each other.  The island has a rich native history & population, with stunning artwork to be discovered through the forest. 

Life is simpler here.  You can go out and get your own food. There are a lot less rules & restrictions, people live more freely.  You can breathe here.  You can relax.  You can truly live...
